Back then: The barracks were built from 1876 to 1879 as the New Artillery Barracks on what was then Faulenbergstrasse (today Nürnberger Strasse).

After the First World War, the barracks was used by the public order police until 1939 and later by machine gun and intelligence troops.

At the end of the Second World War in 1945, US armed forces moved in and initially maintained administration and logistics there.

It was then the location of the “Facilitiy Engineers” and the US colonel, highest head of civil and personnel affairs for the US Military Community of Würzburg, resided there.

Today: The last Americans left the area in the summer of 2007 and handed it over to the federal government at the end of September 2007.

Since then, the Federal Real Estate Agency (BImA) has been responsible for the further planning and use of the area1.

A master plan presented in 2011 envisages building more densely on the site and making it largely usable as commercial space.

To this day, the area is still unused and is becoming increasingly neglected.
