The Giebelstadt Army Airfield played an important role during the Cold War. Originally built by the Luftwaffe in 1935, the airfield was taken over by the United States Army Air Force after World War II.
During the Cold War, the airfield was an important location for the US Army. Among other things, U2 spy planes were stationed here, which carried out reconnaissance flights over Eastern Europe. The airfield was also used jointly by missile units of the US Army and the German Army.
From 1981, US Army helicopter units were also stationed in Giebelstadt. The airfield thus served as a strategic base for various military operations and contributed to surveillance and defense during the Cold War.
